• One of the most important document in a manufacturing company 
• The recipe, formula or parts list to make something
• The thing that tell us what we need to make the end product

Use for bills of materials

• Product definition – the bill specifies the components needed to make the product
• Engineering change control – the bill provide the method for the change of design or components of the product.
• Service parts – replacement parts needed to repair a broken component are determined from the bill of materials
• Planning – define what materials have to be scheduled to make end product and what components have to be purchase to satisfy the product schedules
• Order entity – when a product has a very large number of option such as a car the order entry system very often configure the end product BOM. 
• Manufacturing – the bill provides a list of parts needed to make or assemble a product.
